How to Winterize Your Home | A Bellingham Homeowner’s Checklist
It's that time of year! As Bellingham locals, we know what’s coming- chilly mornings, steady rain, and that unmistakable Pacific Northwest wet weather that settles in until summer. Before the cold sets in, a few preventative maintenance steps can save you from big headaches (and repair bills 💸) later.
Here’s a simple guide to help you prep your home for the colder months, so you can stay cozy and confident all winter long.
1. Seal Out the Cold
-
Check windows and doors for drafts, and replace worn weatherstripping or apply caulk where needed.
-
Close fireplace dampers when not in use to prevent heat loss.
-
Add door sweeps to exterior doors for an extra barrier against drafty weather.
Home Equity Tip: If you have some extra cash saved up, consider upgrading your windows and sliding doors to double-pane tempered glass. This project will not only help keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer, but it boosts the energy efficiency of your home, and adds value down the road if you ever decide to sell.
2. Protect Your Pipes
-
Disconnect and drain your garden hoses.
-
Wrap outdoor spigots with insulated covers (you can find these at any local hardware store).
-
Insulate exposed pipes in crawl spaces or basements to prevent freezing.
-
Make sure you know where your main water shut-off valve is, just in case.
3. Keep the Heat Flowing
-
Change your HVAC filter for better air quality and efficiency.
-
Schedule a professional furnace tune-up or fireplace service, especially if it’s been over a year since you’ve had it done.
-
Test your thermostat and replace batteries in digital models.
-
Reverse ceiling fans to push warm air downward.
4. Prep for Bellingham’s Rainy Season
-
Clean gutters and downspouts to prevent water overflow and roof damage.
-
Check that downspouts direct water at least 3 feet away from your foundation.
-
Inspect your roof for missing or damaged shingles, and get those repaired as soon as possible.
-
Rake leaves away from drains and walkways to prevent flooding and slick spots.
5. Show Some Love to Your Yard
-
Trim overhanging branches that could snap under snow or wind.
-
Store or cover patio furniture and outdoor cushions.
-
Mow your lawn one last time and fertilize for a healthy spring start.
6. Be Ready for Winter Storms
-
Test flashlights, smoke detectors, and carbon monoxide alarms.
-
Restock emergency essentials (batteries, bottled water, pet supplies).
-
Keep a few warm blankets, sleeping bags, and other emergency supplies in an easily accessible location.
7. Cozy Up Inside
-
Clean and inspect your fireplace or wood stove before using it.
-
Layer rugs on tile or hardwood floors for extra warmth.
-
Pull your slippers and fuzzy blankets out of storage.
-
Stock up on your cold weather favorites- tea, coffee, books, etc.
